Introduction:

Welcome football fans!

This blog is for South Jersey High School Football. South Jersey is defined as Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties although teams from Ocean County may be included in my Group 1 rankings if they have been placed in Group 1 South and New Egypt is included as they play a Burlington County schedule (although I did not include Trenton Catholic). So South Jersey is defined as the following conferences: Burlco-Olympic, Cape-Atlantic, Colonial, and Tri-County. I cover only what I know - primarily Group 1, The Tri-County Conference and Gloucester County are my areas of coverage.

Main Sections of this blog:

Rankings are not official until Monday morning

Rankings for 2006, 2007 & 2008 are posted way below.

2009 rankings will start from where 2008 left off and teams will move up or down as the current season progresses. This is not a projection of where I think that they will finish. It is a progression as they show their stuff. It will balance out in the end. I wilol begin theses reanking after all schools (except maybe Clayton, which has a reduced schedule) have played at least one game.

(Pleae note: I am sorry but I removed the sidebar photos to spped up the blog. Many of them will eventually be placed on my BORO70 Facebook page)

1. Group 1 Rankings - 22 teams ranked from top to bottom

2. South Jersey Top 20 [This will replace the Small School Rankings (Groups 1 & 2, Public & Non-Public). Since the Courier Post is changing it's format, I will go along with the change) - Still deciding how many to rank - top 20 or 25 - see poll question on sidebar

3. Tri-County Conference rankings - 18 teams ranked form top to bottom

4. Gloucester County rankings - 13 teams ranked form top to bottom

5. Public Schools Playoff History

6. Largest Margins of Victory (60 point margin or higher)

I will be re-arranging the posts after the 2008 season starts.

Rankings: In 2006, I basically ranked 48 teams in 4 categories.

For 2007: I ranked 52 teams:

24 Group 1 teams: All 19 from the south + 5 from the central

45 Small school teams (CP style): The 24 Group 1 teams + 14 Group 2 south + 2 Non-Public 4 + 1 Non-Public 3 + 4 Non-Public 2 + 0 Non-Public 1 (non-publics with enrollments of 846 or less)

18 Tri-County Conference teams (6 are not included in "Small Schools")

13 Gloucester County teams (1 is not included in other categories)

Gone from the list: Barnegat, Lower Cape May, Woodrow Wilson

Added to the list: Camden Catholic, Holy Cross, Holy Spirit, Middle Twp., St. Augustine Wildwood, Willingboro

For 2008: 55 schools

Gone from the list: St. Augustine

Added to the list: Camden, Lower Cape May, Pemberton, Woodrow Wilson

When I rank teams I stopped including rankings from other sources. Nobody's rankings are perfect, so rank your team as the best that anyone gives you.

This is all just for fun!

Obviously I will never see all of these teams. Help is appreciated. I compare views as per http://www.nj.com/forums/hsfootballs/ and as per e-mails. Newspaper views are irrelevant as I do not view their rankings until after I post mine.

You may comment here. You may check the "other" box if you are not a registered user. I can post or not post your comments. I will most likely not post anonymous comments unless it is something that contributes to the discussion for that week. Please put your forum name or real name or another way for me to identify the source if you want your comment posted. If you give me an e-mail so that I can respond to you, then I can tell you what needs to be edited in your comments before posting (such as re-sending without your name and/or e-mail so that I don't publish your name and/or e-mail).

Please inform me of any typos! I have bad eyes and bad fingers.

Weekly Update: 12/06/09

Cherokee 14, Egg Harbor Township 0 - Cherokee wins the game and Group 4and restores their #1 ranking;

Group 3:

1. Hammonton (11-1) - squeaked out 2 wins on FGs, but won Group 3!

The next 4 could be in any order as TC beat Seneca and Pemberton but lost to BT and Pemberton beat BT, but my sidebar poll ranked TC higher and TC and Seneca won in the first round. TC made it to the finals and Seneca upset Cherokee; Seneca lost to hammonton by 3 and TC lost by 6, so Seneca would get the #2 slot if they had not lost head to head against TC!

2. Timber Creek (9-3) - loss to BT hurts, but stays ahead of Seneca because they beat them

3. Seneca (8-3)

4. Pemberton (6-4)

5. Burlington Twp. (7-3) - 40-0 loss to Pemberton keeps them below them

Playoffs:

Hammonton (1) 30, Winslow Twp. (8) 0

Final:

Hammonton (1) 23, Timber Creek (2) 17

1. Delsea (11-1) - Group Champions - easily!

3. Penns Grove (9-2) - they beat Glassboro and deserve to be ranked here

4. Glassboro (9-2) - they drop after big loss

5. Pennsville (7-3) - they have shown that they desreve this ranking

Playoffs:

Glassboro (1) 35, Palmyra (8) 0

Burlington City did not have enough power points.

2. St. Augustine Prep (9-1) - Close T-Day win moves them down a slot

3. St. Joseph's (8-3)

4. Holy Spirit (8-3)

5. Gloucester Catholic (8-3)

Editorial:

Fans need to not be such wimps about the weather! The players do not get a choice of clothing. As a fan you can prepare and bring layers to put on or take off. Sad to see fans hanging out in the men's rooms to keep warm during the finals. Heck, I remember finals being played in much worse weather. Are we becoming a "soft" society? - YES!

Go out and buy some clothes in which you can watch games in a blizzard with a temp below zero! You want your team to be ready for the finals, so you be ready too! Can't complain about your team's performance if your performance as a fan was sub-par!

South Jersey Overall Rankings - Final

Traditional South Jersey only!!!!

My rules: No more than 6 from any one group or from all Non-Publics - the top 5 from each Group and one wildcard for 26 teams. Non-Publics get the wildcard this week again.

first the undefeated (oops - there are none!):

Next the one loss teams:

1. Cherokee (11-1) - Group 4 #1 - (power points = 166) - beat Williamstown and EHT

Williamstown lost to Cherokee by 9 and EHT lost by 14; Williamstown beat Delsea by 15 and Delsea broke the scoring record for South Jersey. Hammonton had some close games, but showed the ability to win the close ones!

2. Williamstown (10-1) - Group 4 #2 - (148)

3. Egg Harbor Twp. (11-1) - Group 4 #3 - (158)

4. Delsea (11-1) - Group 2 #1 - (160)

5. Hammonton (11-1) - Group 3 #1 - (142)

The top 5 matched the CP's rankings released 4 days later.

6. Paul VI (9-1) - Non-Public #1 - (156) - CP # 10

7. St. Augustine Prep (9-1) - Non-Public #2 - (156) - CP #6

The two and three loss teams get scrambled

9. St. Joe's (9-2) - Non-Public #3 - (118) - Non-Public Group 2 champion! lost to Hammonton by 2 compared to TC's lsoing by 6 - CP # 15

That gives us all of the Group Champions

10. Timber Creek (8-3) - Group 3 #2 - (131) - CP #8

11. Seneca (8-3) - Group 3 #3 - (122) - played a very good 2nd half of season - behind TC due to on-the-field 1st game result - CP #11

12. Washington Twp. (8-2) - Group 4 #4 - (125) - CP #12

13. Paulsboro (10-2) - Group 1 #2 - (105) - beat WD by 8 and Haddonfield beat WD by 2 - CP #16

2 four loss teams slip in!

16. Shawnee (6-4) - Group 4 #5 - (109) - CP #19

That gives us the top 2 from Group 1 plus the top 3 in Groups 2, 3 and Non-Public plus all 5 from Group 4

17. Pemberton (6-4) - Group 3 #4 - (111) - CP not ranked

18. Burlington Twp. (7-3) - Group 3 #5 - (123) - CP not ranked

That gives us all of the top 5 from Group 3

Possibly the best 19th, 20th and 21st teams in history! All down here due to results on the field and not based on talent which should have them higher.

19. Holy Spirit (8-2) - Non-Public #4 - (129) - CP #9

20. Penns Grove (8-2) - Group 1 #3 - (121) - CP #20

21. Glassboro (8-2) - Group 1 #4 - (135) - a top 10 team that ran out of steam and dropped down to here. In mid-season form could have beaten anyone from #5 down - CP #18

23. Bishop Eustace (8-2) - wildcard pick - Non-Public - (113 ) - CP #14

Let me know of any typos please! I am half blind (should be a ref if I didn't have bad knees) and have fumble fingers when I type!

2009 Group 1 Rankings - Final

Until they lose, the defending Group Champions are always ranked #1. The team most likely to take over the championship will be #2. Since PG beat Glassboro, they are ranked #1 and Glassboro is #2 and still favored to win championship.

Top contenders to take the championship away from Glassboro = Woodbury, Paulsboro and Penns Grove

I am not listing the computer rankings as I think that their bogusness has been well proven. I may add at the end of the season.

Fina

1. Woodbury (11-1) - holds top spot with 2 wins over #2 and one win over #3 - 3rd seed with 118

2. Paulsboro (9-2) - bigger win over #4 than PG had, but lost by more to #1, so I add up the scores 9using the most recent game against Woodbury and the game against Glassboro and come up with Paulsboro 35-14 and PG 30-31 - 4th seed with 105

3. Penns Grove (9-2) - tough playoff loss - 2nd seed in playoffs - 121 power points

4. Glassboro (9-2) – Defending Group 1 South Champions - ran out of stream! - 1st seed with 135 power points

5. Pennsville (7-3) - 6th seed with 89

6. Schalick (7-3) - 7th seed with 88

7. Haddon Heights (6-4) - 5th seed with 97

8. Florence (6-4) - 6th seed in Central - 88

9. Palmyra (6-4) - 8th seed with 72

10. Burlington City (5-5) - 69

11. Audubon (5-5) - 50

12. Haddon Twp. (5-5) - 56

13. Maple Shade (4-6) - 56
14. Gloucester (3-7) - 55

15. Lindenwold (2-8) - 56 - drops with consolation loss

16. Pitman (4-6) - both wins are over Wildwood! - 35

17. Clayton (3-4) - 28 - beat Salem and Riverside but short on power points due to number of games played

18. Salem (2-8) - 45

19. New Egypt (2-8) - 34

20. Gateway (0-10) - 27

21. Riverside (0-10) - 19

22. Wildwood (0-8) - 21

Playoffs:
Palmyra at Glassboro - minor problem for the BORO, but came on strong in 2nd half!
Schalick at Penns Grove - re-matches are always scary, But Schalick came in believing in themselves - PG won but Schalick almost revenged the first round match-up of 2006
Pennsville at Woodbury - exciting match-up won by Woodbury but they almost let PV come onto their field to win just like PG did last year!
Haddon Heights at Paulsboro - a re-match and very few beat Paulsboro at Paulsboro in the playoffs and that is how it came out!
2nd round:
Paulsboro at Glassboro - Paulsboro played their best game in 3 years and Glassboro played their worst game in 3 years as Glasboro ran out of steam late in the season and Paulsboro improved as the season progressed.
Woodbury at Penns Grove - it was a great game, but Woodbury turned the tables on last year's outcome!
So it was an all Colonial final after an all Tri-County the year before and after one from each for the previous 5 years!
Final:
Paulsboro at Woodbury - I favored Paulsboro to avenge their ealier loss, but that was not to be!
Woodbury shut down Paulsboro and dominated the game!
Woodbury 16, Paulsboro 0
Note to the fans: Why be such chumps in the bad weather? You have stood (or sat) in worse weather before!!!! AND the players had to deal with it with no clothing options!

There is also a 103-0 game - Bordentown Manual Training over Logan Athletic Club (Phila.) in 1922. I am not sure whether to count them as high schools.

Learn when to "take a knee".

Sometimes such scores "can't be helped" as stuff happens, but there are times when you just run toward the tackler and go down. Yes, the 2nd and 3rd string want to score, too. BUT what was the score when you put them in and were you shuffling players in and out early in the game? If the margin is 50 or higher, the coach will hear me yell "That's enough coach!"

Glassboro/Paulsboro Playoff History:

2008: Glassboro wins championship and beats Paulsboro in semi-finals 21-13

2009: Paiulsboro moves to cahmionship game and beats Glassboro in semi-fianals 35-0

Only 5 times has neither appeared in playoffs!

Paulsboro has made 28 appearances = 80% of the time

Glassboro has appeared in the playoffs 26 times (not counting 1974 "declared champion") = 74.2% of the time

They have both been in the playoffs 22 times = 62.9% of the time

Paulsboro is 16-5 in championship games

Glassboro is 7-8 in championship games + 1 championship in 1974 when they were "declared" champions because there were no other qualifiers in the system used that year.

Combined they have been in the finals 37 times (including 2009) which makes 52.9% of the finalists.

Combined, they have won 22 championships (23 counting 1974), which gives them 67.6 % of all on-the-field championships. If Paulsboro wins in 2009, they will be 1/2 game short of having 50% of all championships. This does not include Glassboro's "declared championship". If you add Woodbury's 5 championships (Woodbury is 5-2 in championship games and has appeared in the playoffs 15 times), then Gloucester County has all but 6 Championships - Burlington Twp. (2), Palmyra, Florence & Schalick (2) - for 82.35% and will gain another in 2009.

Paulsboro is 7-2 against Glassboro in championship games

Paulsboro is 3-3 against Glassboro in semi-finals

It's a BORO thing - you wouldn't understand!

Let me know if I goofed!

Games I attended in 2008:

I have attended the following games and scrimmages:

Glassboro at Bridgeton - scrimmage

Gloucester Catholic at Glassboro - scrimmage

Glassboro at Lindenwold - scrimmage

Salem at Glassboro

Clearview at Gloucester Catholic

2nd quarter of Washington Twp. vs. Winslow Twp. (rest was viewed on TV)

Glassboro at Pennsville

Williamstown at Deptford

Gloucester Catholic at Delsea

Glassboro at Clayton

Wildwood at Glassboro

Woodrow Wilson at Florence

Glassboro at Schalick

Woodstown at Gloucester Catholic and Maine at Delaware

Gloucester at Glassboro

Deptford at Gloucester Catholic

Penns Grove at Glassboro

Schalick at Gloucester

Woodstown at Kingsway (early) and Clearview at Cumberland (late)

Williamstown at Gloucester Catholic

Glassboro at Pitman

Gateway at Paulsboro

playoff - Gloucester at Glassboro

playoff - Penns Grove at Woodbury

playoff - Haddonfield at Delsea

playoff - Glassboro at Paulsboro

Deptford at Glassboro

St. Joe's at Hammonton (good food!)

playoff - West Deptford at Delsea

playoff - Penns Grove at Glassboro

Championships:

Mainland wins Group 4 with a 21-14 victory over Southern. It was 21-0 at the half

Shawnee wins Group 3 with a 28-7 victory over Hammonton

Who should be #1?

The only common opponent was Hammonton. Mainland beat them by 31 and Shawnee beat them by 21.

Delsea wins Group 2 in a tight game with a last secong FG over West Deptford 17-14.

Glassboro wins Group 1 with a 28-8 win over Penns Grove.

Since Glassboro beat Paulsboro by 8 which beat West Deptford by 9, that would give Glassboro a 17 point advantage, but Delsea beat Deptford by 36 and Glassboro beat Deptford by 20 which would give Delsea a 16 point advantage. So point spreads are even, but Glassboro went undefeated whereas Delsea lost to a non-playoff team.

Holy Cross wins Non-Public 2 with a 7-0 win over Hudson Catholic. With 2 losses to playoff teams and one loss to a non-playoff team, it is hrd to know where to place them.

So, I rank the Champions:

1. Mainland

2. Shawnee

3. Glassboro

4. Delsea

5. Holy Cross

Amongst non-champions:

Cherokee looks to be the strongest by far and should be #3 in South Jersey

Washington Twp. beat Williamstown and they come after the undefeated teams.

St. Augustine only lost in the playoffs. they lost by a big score, but the team they lost to is a great team. They get ranked right behind Williamstown.

Paulsboro would be next with their great defense and only 1 loss.

Hammonton has 3 losses and one could consider them next, but Egg Harbor Township with 4 losses had better performances against their common opponents and beat Hammonton by 18. Hard to put Egg Harbor Twp. any higher with 4 losses, but they definitely belong above Hammonton.

Eastern beat Washington Twp. They lost to Mainland by 28 and Hammonton lost to Mainland by 31. Egg Harbor Twp. lost to Mainland by 3.

Anothet team to consider is Triton. They lost to Shawnee by 26 and 35 and Hammonton lost by 21.

So, my top 10 for all of the traditional South Jersey area is:

1. Mainland 12-0

2. Shawnee 12-0

3. Cherokee 9-2 - lost to Shawnee and Southern

4. Glassboro 12-0

5. Washington Twp. 8-3 - lost to Cherokee, Mainland and Eastern - can't be higher with 3 losses, but they are ranked higher than 3 one loss teams.

6. Williamstown 9-1 - lost to Washington Twp. or would have been #4

7. St. Augustine 10-1 - lost to Bergen Catholic

8. Paulsboro 9-1 - lost to Glassboro

9. Egg Harbor Twp. 6-4 - lost to Atlantic City, Ocean City, Cherokee and Mainland,

10. Eastern 7-3 - lost to Pennsauken, Cherokee and Mainland - loss to Pennsauken keeps them from being ranked #5

2008: Small School Rankings

These rankings are final (subject to some proof-reading).

I am having trouble posting comments in this section, but I do read them and absorb them.

I am not listing the computer rankings as I think that their bogusness has been well proven. I may get back to them later in the season.

Explanations of rankings are in the weekly reports above and below.

I question whether some of the non-public teams should even be a part of these rankings, but I will follow the CP's lead and if their enrollment is less than the largest Group 2 in the state, I will include them. CP rankings are for 11/29
