Introduction:

Welcome football fans!

This blog is for South Jersey High School Football. South Jersey is defined as Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem Counties although teams from Ocean County may be included in my Group 1 rankings if they have been placed in Group 1 South and New Egypt is included as they play a Burlington County schedule (although I did not include Trenton Catholic). So South Jersey is defined as the following conferences: Burlco-Olympic, Cape-Atlantic, Colonial, and Tri-County. I cover only what I know - primarily Group 1, The Tri-County Conference and Gloucester County are my areas of coverage.

Main Sections of this blog:

Rankings are not official until Monday morning

Rankings for 2006, 2007 & 2008 are posted way below.

2009 rankings will start from where 2008 left off and teams will move up or down as the current season progresses. This is not a projection of where I think that they will finish. It is a progression as they show their stuff. It will balance out in the end. I wilol begin theses reanking after all schools (except maybe Clayton, which has a reduced schedule) have played at least one game.

(Pleae note: I am sorry but I removed the sidebar photos to spped up the blog. Many of them will eventually be placed on my BORO70 Facebook page)

1. Group 1 Rankings - 22 teams ranked from top to bottom

2. South Jersey Top 20 [This will replace the Small School Rankings (Groups 1 & 2, Public & Non-Public). Since the Courier Post is changing it's format, I will go along with the change) - Still deciding how many to rank - top 20 or 25 - see poll question on sidebar

3. Tri-County Conference rankings - 18 teams ranked form top to bottom

4. Gloucester County rankings - 13 teams ranked form top to bottom

5. Public Schools Playoff History

6. Largest Margins of Victory (60 point margin or higher)

I will be re-arranging the posts after the 2008 season starts.

Rankings: In 2006, I basically ranked 48 teams in 4 categories.

For 2007: I ranked 52 teams:

24 Group 1 teams: All 19 from the south + 5 from the central

45 Small school teams (CP style): The 24 Group 1 teams + 14 Group 2 south + 2 Non-Public 4 + 1 Non-Public 3 + 4 Non-Public 2 + 0 Non-Public 1 (non-publics with enrollments of 846 or less)

18 Tri-County Conference teams (6 are not included in "Small Schools")

13 Gloucester County teams (1 is not included in other categories)

Gone from the list: Barnegat, Lower Cape May, Woodrow Wilson

Added to the list: Camden Catholic, Holy Cross, Holy Spirit, Middle Twp., St. Augustine Wildwood, Willingboro

For 2008: 55 schools

Gone from the list: St. Augustine

When I rank teams I stopped including rankings from other sources. Nobody's rankings are perfect, so rank your team as the best that anyone gives you.

This is all just for fun!

Obviously I will never see all of these teams. Help is appreciated. I compare views as per http://www.nj.com/forums/hsfootballs/ and as per e-mails. Newspaper views are irrelevant as I do not view their rankings until after I post mine.

You may comment here. You may check the "other" box if you are not a registered user. I can post or not post your comments. I will most likely not post anonymous comments unless it is something that contributes to the discussion for that week. Please put your forum name or real name or another way for me to identify the source if you want your comment posted. If you give me an e-mail so that I can respond to you, then I can tell you what needs to be edited in your comments before posting (such as re-sending without your name and/or e-mail so that I don't publish your name and/or e-mail).

Please inform me of any typos! I have bad eyes and bad fingers.

Weekly Update: 11/01/09

Cherokee 36, Eastern 17 - solid win against another really good team

Williamstown 41, Gloucester Catholic 0 - big win against a probale Non-Public Group 2 finalist

St. Augustine Prep 48, Pleasantville 18 - big game this week against Holy Spirit

Delsea 55, Highland 14 - another good win

Hammonton 41, Millville 0 - lost on the poll question again!

West Deptford 42, Gateway 0 - 42 - 0 at the half! - see poll questions: fans choose them above Hammonton, but erred in placing Glassboro above them, but the fans rule and they move up a notch

Penns Grove 14, Glassboro 12 - tough game that went PGs way. BORO will have to drop below PG for now - biggest drop in rankings as no Group 1 schools will be ranked in top 10!

Egg Harbor Twp. - bye week, but they move up a slot

Paul VI 37, Northern Burlington 20 - ok win, but closer than I thought it would be

Washington Twp. 21, Cherry Hill East 14 - unexpectably close score! - moves up 2 slots as Glassboro and Eastern lost

Timber Creek 26, Winslow Twp. 21 - Creek looked ok again and holds their spot just below Township

Haddonfield 40, Lindenwold 8 - 40-8 at the half - solid win

Bishop Eustace 34, New Egpyt 0 - very nice win

Woodbury 40, Overbrook 6 - ok win and it will be hard for me to rank Group 1

Paulsboro 27, Collingswood 0 - lower score than expected

Camden Catholic 29, Cinnaminson 28- this will drop them down a bit!

Seneca 14, Shawnee 7 - nice win and rising in the rankings

St. Joe's 55, Lower Cape May 0 - 48-0 at the half

Holy Spirit 35, Buena 0 - nice win and moving up some slots as they prepare for St. Augustine

Pemberton 26, Camden 0 - good win after losing last week

Pennsville 42, Woodstown 7 - great comeback after big loss last week

Bridgeton 28, Robbinsville 6 - this game was nothing but schedule relief from their usual CAL schedule.

Haddon Heights 35, Haddon Twp. 12 - heights seems to have secured 5th seed in Group 1

Palmyra - bye and awaiting big game against Florence

Burlington Twp. 17, Florence 6 - BT puts a stop to Flo's 3 gaem win streak

Cumberalnd 20, Clearview 13 - not an important game except in terms of how it affected the power points for Glassboro and PG

Schalick 25, Pitman 2 - Schalick should be 8th or possibly 7th seed

Clayton 20, salem 0 - anytime Clayton wins is worth mentioning, especially a 20 point win against a team not named Wildwood!

Moorestown 28, Pennsauken 27- very great game!

Millville 12, Mainland 7 - as Mainland continues to fall after a great season last year

My top 5 for each public group:

Group 4: (This is easy)

1. Cherokee (7-0)

2. Williamstown (7-0)

3. Egg Harbor Twp. (7-0)

4. Washington Twp. (5-1)

5. Eastern (5-2)

Shawnee lingers as a possible playoff team along with 2 Toms River teams

Group 3: biggest gap between each team

1. Hammonton (7-0) - continually impressive

2. Timber Creek (6-1) - not winning big, but winning!

3. Seneca (5-2) - doing ok now

4. Pemberton (4-3)

5. Burlington Twp. (6-2) - 40-0 loss to Pemberton keeps them below them

Moorestown lingers below these as Highland falls

Group 2: (only 6 teams have winning records)

1. Delsea (8-0) - resting for playoffs and has wrapped up 1st seed

2. West Deptford (8-0) - 2nd seed for playoffs

3. Haddonfield (7-1) - 3rd seed appears secure

4. Cinnaminson (5-2) - 4th seed seems solid with an easy game this week

5. Bridgeton (5-3) - looks good for 5th seed

Willingboro seems headed for 6th seed and should be 5-3.

Buena and Woodrow Wilson should round out the field with 4-4 records

Group 1: the toughest Group to rank - I could make an argument for any of the top 4 to be #1

1. Penns Grove (6-1) -they beat Glassboro and deserbve to be ranked here until they lose, even though I am sure some rankings will place Glassboro above them

2. Glassboro (6-1) - they hold this spot until they lose another one

3. Woodbury (6-1) - beat Paulsboro and must stay above them even though some rankings place paulsboro above them

4. Paulsboro (7-1)

5. Pennsville (6-1) - they get this ranking but it is debatable, but deserve a poll question to try to maintain it which I forgot to do last week, so I will this week

Haddon Heights (5th seed), Palmyra (7th or 8th seed) and Schalick (8th or &th seed) will round off the playoff field!

Non-Publics (all together):

1. St. Augustine Prep (7-0)

2. Paul VI (7-0)

Next 3 are debatable, but I'll leave them same as last week.

3. Gloucester Catholic (5-2)

4. Bishop Eustace (6-1)

5. St. Joseph's (5-2)

Holy Spirit (6-1) - tough decision as they easily handled the team that beat St. Joe's, but on-the-field, St. Joe's beat them - so they get the wildcard

Games I attended in 2009 as of 11/01/09:

Sept. 11th - Gloucester Catholic at Clearview

Sept. 12th - Glassboro at Salem

Sept. 18th - Schalick at Glassboro

Sept. 13th - Delaware State at Delaware

Sept. 25th - Cumberland at Glassboro

Sept. 26th - Delsea at Gloucester Catholic (1st half only) and Salem at Penns Grove

Oct. 2nd - Haddon Heights at West Deptford - finally looking at the Colonial

Oct 3rd - Kingsway at Gloucester Catholic - I have now seen 4 of the 8 Royal Division teams against GC and will probably see them against Williamstown, but probably not see them against Highland, Cumberland and Deptford

Oct. 9th - Glassboro at Gloucester

Oct. 10th - Paulsboro at Audubon - another look at the Colonial

Oct. 16th - Woodstown at Glassboro

Oct. 23rd - Pennsville at Glassboro

Oct. 24th - Pemberton at Timber Creek

Oct. 30th - Gloucester Catholic at Williamstown

Oct. 31st - Glassboro at Penns Grove

Next:

Nov. 6th - Kingsway at Glassboro

Nov. 7th - Hofstra at Delaware

Nov. 13th - playoff at Glassboro

Nov. 14th - playoff ???? - probably at Penns Grove or Woodbury or Paulsboro

Nov. 20th - playoff semifinal ???? - probably at Glassboro

Nov. 21st - playoff semifinal ???? - probably at Penns Grove or Woodbury or Paulsboro

Nov. 26th - Glassboro at Deptford (10:30)

Nov. 27th - Moorestown at Holy Cross or stay at home

Nov. 28th - St' Joe's at Hammonton or West Deptford at Paulsboro

Dec. 4th - Group ???? Finals

Dec. 5th - Group ???? Finals

South Jersey Overall Rankings after week #8:

Traditional South Jersey only!!!!

My rules: No more than 6 from any one group or from all Non-Publics - the top 5 from each Group and one wildcard for 26 teams. Non-Publics get the wildcard

(poll questions to be posted later today)

1. Cherokee (7-0) - Group 4 #1

2. Williamstown (7-0) - Group 4 #2 - looking like a real contender for #1

3. St. Augustine Prep (7-0) - Non-Public #1

4. Delsea (8-0) - Group 2 #1

5. West Deptford (8-0) - Group 2 #2 - see 2 poll questions from last week - moves above Hammonton based on poll question, but the other question put Glassboro above them - since glassboro lost, that question is now void.

6. Hammonton (7-0) - Group 3 #1 - see poll question from last week

7. Egg Harbor Twp. (7-0) - Group 4 #3

8. Paul VI (7-0) - Non-Public #2

9. Washington Twp. (6-1) - Group 4 #4 - need to prove that I do not have them ranked too high!

10. Eastern (5-2) - Group 4 #5 as the top 5 Group 4 teams all make the top 10

The next two had close losses compared to the 2 below them

11. Penns Grove (6-1) - Group 1 #1

12. Glassboro (6-1) - Group 1 #2 - longest winning streak stopped at 30!

13. Timber Creek (6-1) - Group 3 #2

That gives us the top 2 in each Group (and all 5 from Group 4)

14. Haddonfield (7-1) - Group 2 #3

3 Non-Publics get grouped together as their rankings are debatable

15. Gloucester Catholic (5-2) - Non-Public #3

16. Bishop Eustace (6-1) - Non-Public #4

17. St. Joe's (5-2) - Non-Public #5

18. Seneca (5-2) - Group 3 #3

19. Holy Spirit (6-1) - wildcard pick - Non-Public

The next 2 have to be ranked back-to-back

20. Woodbury (6-1) - Group 1 #3

21. Paulsboro (6-1) - Group 1 #4

22. Pemberton (4-3) - Group 3 #4

23. Cinnaminson (5-2) - Group 2 #4

24. Pennsville (6-1) - Group 1 #5

25. Burlington Twp. (6-2) - Group 3 #5

26. Bridgeton (5-3) - Group 2 #5

Highland (5-3) - drops out, but remember that they beat Bridgeton!

2009 Group 1 Rankings after week #8

Until they lose, the defending Group Champions are always ranked #1. The team most likely to take over the championship will be #2.

Top contenders to take the championship away from Glassboro = Woodbury, Paulsboro and Penns Grove

I am not listing the computer rankings as I think that their bogusness has been well proven. I may add at the end of the season.

as of 11/01/09

Major changes this week! Only 2 undefeated teams left and they play this Friday!

1. Penns Grove (6-1) - when you beat #1 and everyone has the same number of losses, you take over #1 - playoffs will settle this!

2. Glassboro (6-1) – Defending Group 1 South Champions - outscoring opponents 145-40 - has clinched 2nd seed and gets 1st seed with a win over Kingsway

3. Woodbury (6-1) - heading towards 3rd seed in playoffs!

4. Paulsboro (7-1)

5. Pennsville (6-1)

I switched the next two (again)

6. Haddon Heights (5-2)

7. Schalick (5-2)

8. Palmyra (5-2)

9. Haddon Twp. (4-4)

3 of the next 4 lost this past weekend

10. Florence (4-3)

11. Burlington City (4-3) - lost to Florence

12. Maple Shade (3-5) - previouslyranked above Florence because they beat them, but they lost to Burlington City, so now they drop

13. Lindenwold (2-5) - above Audubon because they beat them

14. Audubon (2-5)

15. Gloucester (2-5)

16. New Egypt (1-5)

17. Clayton (2-2) - only win is over Wildwood!

18. Salem (1-6)

19. Gateway (0-7)

20. Pitman (2-5) - both wins are over Wildwood!

21. Riverside (0-7)

22. Wildwood (0-7)

Playoffs scenarios (I will update this in a few minutes):

Power Point projections (I hope I progammed it right) (subject to my speculation on how their opponents win or lose, so I may change it as I change my speculations)

Clayton beating Salem changes things a little.

Glassboro (7-1) 135 - a loss to Kingsway drops them to 120 (and 2nd seed) - assuming PG beats Gloucester (or add 2) and Schalick beats Clayton (or subtract 3) and Salem beats Wildwood (or subtract 3) and Pennsville beats Pitman (or subtract 3)

Penns Grove (7-1) 121 - assuming they beat Gloucester (or subtract 11) and Clearview beats Deptford (or subtract 3) and Glassboro beats Kingsway (or subtract 3)

Woodbury (7-1) 118 - must beat Lindenwold (or subtract 11) - assuming Audubon beats Gateway (or subtract 3)

Paulsboro (7-1) 105 - bye week and just watching the others - assuming Woodbury beats Lindenwold (or add 2)
Haddon Heights (6-2) 97 - must beat Sterling (or subtract 6) - assumes that Audubon beats Gateway (or subtract 3)
One upset involving one of their previous opponents could change the points below:

If tied, the strength of schedule tie-breaker favors the team with fewer wins. It should be changed to favor the team with the most wins since the focus is supposed to be on winning!

Pennsville (7-1) 89 - must beat Pitman (or subtract 11) - assuming Clearview beats Deptford (or add 3) and Bridgeton beats Middle Twp. (or add 3) and Glassboro beats Kingsway (or subtract 1) and PG beats Gloucester (or add 3)

Schalick (6-2) 88 - my safest prediction - must beat Clayton or lose 11 points - assuming Glassboro beats Kingsway (or subtract 1) and PG beats Gloucester (or add 2) and Pennsville beats Pitman (or add 3)

Palmyra (6-2) 87 - must beat Florence or only have 72 - assuming that Cinnaminson beats Riverside (or add 2) and Burlington City beats Delran (or add 3) and Willingboro beats New Egypt (or add 3)

Haddon Twp. (4-4) 69 - They are out!

2009 Tri-County Rankings after week #8

Rankings are on my Tri-County Blog

http://boro70tc.blogspot.com/

There are 7 solid playoff caliber teams: Glassboro, Penns Grove, Pennsville and Schalick in Group 1; Delsea in Group 2; Williamstown in Group 4; Gloucester Catholic in Non-Public Group 2

Kingsway and Highland are on the edge of the playoffs.

Clearview, Salem, Woodstown, Cumberland, Gloucester, Deptford, Clayton, Pitman and Wildwood will not make the playoffs

2009 Gloucester County Rankings after week #8

There are 7 solid playoff caliber teams: Glassboro, Paulsboro and Woodbury in Group 1; Delsea and West Deptford in Group 2; Washington Twp. and Williamstown in Group 4; Could the county have all the finalists in Groups 1, 2 and 4 or at least in one of the groups like last year and the previous three years? Could the county have at least one finalist in all 4 groups?

Kingsway is rising in Group 3 and was projected to give the county 8 playoff teams out of 13 schools playing in a weak Group (in terms of depth), but now will probably not make it!

Clearview, Deptford, Clayton, Pitman and Gateway will not make the playoffs

I am not listing the computer rankings as I think that their bogusness has been well proven. I may get back to at the end of the season.

1. Williamstown (7-0) last year #3

2. Delsea (8-0) last year #5

3. West Deptford (8-0) last year #6

4. Washington Twp (6-1) last year #2 -waiting for someone above them to lose so that they can move up

5. Glassboro (6-1) – defending Classic Division and Group1 South Champions - last year #1 -

6. Woodbury (6-1) - Everyone else ranks Paulsboro higher, but on-the-field score is what counts and not stats!

7. Paulsboro (7-1) - last year #4

8. Kingsway (3-4)

9. Clearview (1-6)

The rest need to show me something:

Tough call with the rest

10. Clayton (2-2) - with 2 wins and one to a team not named Wildwood, they deserve a little recognition!

11. Gateway (0-7)

12. Deptford (0-7)

13. Pitman (2-5)

Sometimes such scores "can't be helped" as stuff happens, but there are times when you just run toward the tackler and go down. Yes, the 2nd and 3rd string want to score, too. BUT what was the score when you put them in and were you shuffling players in and out early in the game? If the margin is 50 or higher, the coach will hear me yell "That's enough coach!"

Only 5 times has neither appeared in playoffs!

Paulsboro has made 27 appearances = 79.4% of the time

Glassboro has appeared in the playoffs 25 times (not counting 1974 "declared champion") = 73.5% of the time

They have both been in the playoffs 21 times = 61.8% of the time

Paulsboro is 16-5 in championship games

Glassboro is 7-8 in championship games + 1 championship in 1974 when they were "declared" champions because there were no other qualifiers in the system used that year.

Combined they have been in the finals 36 times which makes 52.9% of the finalists.

Combined, they have won 22 championships (23 counting 1974), which gives them 67.6 % of all on-the-field championships. Paulsboro currently is one short of having 50% of all championships. This does not include Glassboro's "declared championship". If you add Woodbury's 5 championships (Woodbury is 5-2 in championship games and has appeared in the playoffs 15 times), then Gloucester County has all but 6 Championships - Burlington Twp. (2), Palmyra, Florence & Schalick (2) - for 82.35%.

Paulsboro is 7-2 against Glassboro in championship games

Paulsboro is 2-3 against Glassboro in semi-finals

It's a BORO thing - you wouldn't understand!

Let me know if I goofed!

Games I attended in 2008:

I have attended the following games and scrimmages:

Glassboro at Bridgeton - scrimmage

Gloucester Catholic at Glassboro - scrimmage

Glassboro at Lindenwold - scrimmage

Salem at Glassboro

Clearview at Gloucester Catholic

2nd quarter of Washington Twp. vs. Winslow Twp. (rest was viewed on TV)

Glassboro at Pennsville

Williamstown at Deptford

Gloucester Catholic at Delsea

Glassboro at Clayton

Wildwood at Glassboro

Woodrow Wilson at Florence

Glassboro at Schalick

Woodstown at Gloucester Catholic and Maine at Delaware

Gloucester at Glassboro

Deptford at Gloucester Catholic

Penns Grove at Glassboro

Schalick at Gloucester

Woodstown at Kingsway (early) and Clearview at Cumberland (late)

Williamstown at Gloucester Catholic

Glassboro at Pitman

Gateway at Paulsboro

playoff - Gloucester at Glassboro

playoff - Penns Grove at Woodbury

playoff - Haddonfield at Delsea

playoff - Glassboro at Paulsboro

Deptford at Glassboro

St. Joe's at Hammonton (good food!)

playoff - West Deptford at Delsea

playoff - Penns Grove at Glassboro

Championships:

Mainland wins Group 4 with a 21-14 victory over Southern. It was 21-0 at the half

Shawnee wins Group 3 with a 28-7 victory over Hammonton

Who should be #1?

The only common opponent was Hammonton. Mainland beat them by 31 and Shawnee beat them by 21.

Delsea wins Group 2 in a tight game with a last secong FG over West Deptford 17-14.

Glassboro wins Group 1 with a 28-8 win over Penns Grove.

Since Glassboro beat Paulsboro by 8 which beat West Deptford by 9, that would give Glassboro a 17 point advantage, but Delsea beat Deptford by 36 and Glassboro beat Deptford by 20 which would give Delsea a 16 point advantage. So point spreads are even, but Glassboro went undefeated whereas Delsea lost to a non-playoff team.

Holy Cross wins Non-Public 2 with a 7-0 win over Hudson Catholic. With 2 losses to playoff teams and one loss to a non-playoff team, it is hrd to know where to place them.

So, I rank the Champions:

1. Mainland

2. Shawnee

3. Glassboro

4. Delsea

5. Holy Cross

Amongst non-champions:

Cherokee looks to be the strongest by far and should be #3 in South Jersey

Washington Twp. beat Williamstown and they come after the undefeated teams.

St. Augustine only lost in the playoffs. they lost by a big score, but the team they lost to is a great team. They get ranked right behind Williamstown.

Paulsboro would be next with their great defense and only 1 loss.

Hammonton has 3 losses and one could consider them next, but Egg Harbor Township with 4 losses had better performances against their common opponents and beat Hammonton by 18. Hard to put Egg Harbor Twp. any higher with 4 losses, but they definitely belong above Hammonton.

Eastern beat Washington Twp. They lost to Mainland by 28 and Hammonton lost to Mainland by 31. Egg Harbor Twp. lost to Mainland by 3.

Anothet team to consider is Triton. They lost to Shawnee by 26 and 35 and Hammonton lost by 21.

So, my top 10 for all of the traditional South Jersey area is:

1. Mainland 12-0

2. Shawnee 12-0

3. Cherokee 9-2 - lost to Shawnee and Southern

4. Glassboro 12-0

5. Washington Twp. 8-3 - lost to Cherokee, Mainland and Eastern - can't be higher with 3 losses, but they are ranked higher than 3 one loss teams.

6. Williamstown 9-1 - lost to Washington Twp. or would have been #4

7. St. Augustine 10-1 - lost to Bergen Catholic

8. Paulsboro 9-1 - lost to Glassboro

9. Egg Harbor Twp. 6-4 - lost to Atlantic City, Ocean City, Cherokee and Mainland,

10. Eastern 7-3 - lost to Pennsauken, Cherokee and Mainland - loss to Pennsauken keeps them from being ranked #5

2008: Small School Rankings

These rankings are final (subject to some proof-reading).

I am having trouble posting comments in this section, but I do read them and absorb them.

I am not listing the computer rankings as I think that their bogusness has been well proven. I may get back to them later in the season.

Explanations of rankings are in the weekly reports above and below.

I question whether some of the non-public teams should even be a part of these rankings, but I will follow the CP's lead and if their enrollment is less than the largest Group 2 in the state, I will include them. CP rankings are for 11/29
