12/03/07

Input is appreciated: click on comments and give me your intelligent view

I've added the calpreps rankings as another comparison. calprep seems to adjust everyone on a team's schedule after a gamw whereas Born only seems to adjust the teams that played.

The Born rankings are updated for 12/03/07 . The Born rankings seem somewhat bogus, so I can't stop laughing! But, they are getting closer to me in the Gloucester Couny rankings although we are far apart in the others. Here is an example of how the Born Index goofs: Glassboro wins by 64 having put back-ups in before halftime, but drops 0.4 points in the ratings. It seems that Born had them as 66.3 points higher (76.3-10.0) than Pitman the week before. After the game, they were 65.4 higher (75.9-10.4). In that game Glassboro was ahead 25-0 after the 1st and could have scored 100 if they had tried, but Born does not take that into account. So Glassboro uses all 48 players in a blowout and loses 0.4 points while Pitman gains 0.4. So, when you call off the dogs, you lose points in the ratings! The Born rankings also give a team too much credit for the past years and it hurts teams like Cumberland who turn their program around and keeps some teams who were great in the past (like one win Deptford) ranked too highly.

My Top 25:

I look at 2 things first - overall record and how far did the team advance in the playoffs.

Then I look at head-to-head and Group size

12-0 teams first!

1. Holy Spirit (12-0)

2. Moorestown (12-0)

2a. Toms River North (12-0)

3. Glassboro (12-0)

4. Mainland (10-2) - the best 2 loss team by far

5. Shawnee (9-3) - the best 3 loss team by far

6. Holy Cross (9-2) - earned this spot with convincing win in finals

6a. Lacey Twp. (9-3) - best team to lose a final

Now it gets tough and more debatable!

7. Winslow Twp. (8-3)

8. Camden Catholic (8-2)

9. Paulsboro (11-1; 9-3 - forfeits)

10. Hammonton (9-2)

11. Paul VI (9-2)

11a. Toms River East (7-3)

11b. Southern (8-3)

12. Washington Twp. (8-2)

13. Eastern (9-2)

14. Gloucester Catholic (8-3)

15. West Deptford (10-2)

16. Williamstown (8-2)

17. Cherokee (7-3)

17a. Pt. Pleasant Boro (10-2)

18. Cumberland (7-3)

19. Florence (8-2)

20. St. Joe's (7-3)

21. St. Augustine (8-2)

22. Clearview (7-3)

23. Bridgeton (7-4)

24. Woodbury (8-3)

25. Timber Creek (6-4)

25a. Manasquan (6-4)

Honorable Mention:

Atlantic City (5-5) - the best 5-5 team

Games I attended in 2007

I attended the following scrimmages:

St. Joe's/Paulsboro/Paul VI

Glassboro/Bridgeton

Glassboro/Lindenwold

Paulsboro/Schalick

Glassboro/Gloucester Catholic

I don't take must stock in terms of teams "winning" a scrimmage.

1. It is not game conditions. You play 10 plays and not 4 downs. Sometimes turnovers are discounted.

2. Special teams do not do much in early scrimmages

3. Different coaches have different approaches to scrimmages. Most are simply evaluating talent and giving their players a chance to hit someone other than their own team mates.

4. The best teams play their best at the end of the season and not the beginning.

5. I have seen many teams look bad in scimmages who later made it to the Championship Game and many who looked good not make it.

Anyone who claims "victory" in a scrimmage is a fool.

I attended:

Woodstown at Penns Grove

Clayton at Glassboro

Delsea at Gloucester Catholic

Tribute to #19

Gloucester City High School retired jersey #19 on Sept. 22nd, 2007.

Marc Ryan sacrificed his life in service to his country.

He was also a great example on-the-field. He displayed great sportsmanship. If he tackled you, he would help you up after the play.

He was also a "mudder". He played great on wet fields. I have said for years that Gloucester played great on rainy days and he was a primary reason for my statements.

Here's to Marc Ryan. South Jersey Football and our nation are honored to have been lucky enough to have you. I feel honored just to have watched you play.

2007: Small School Rankings: Final

Rankings are final: (corrected on 12/5/07)

(with last week's CP rankings; Born Index for 12/03/07 and calpreps for 12/03/07)

I question whether some of the non-public teams should even be a part of these rankings, but I will follow the CP's lead and if their enrollment is less than the largest Group 2 in the state, I will include them. CP rankings are from last week.

Don't forget to check out more on Tri-County Conference football on my Tri-County Blog:

http://boro70tc.blogspot.com/

Born index is from 12/03/07: Born Index is just for amusement - as last year Clearview ended up #4 (even though they beat #1, 2 & 3 - ha! and note how some teams have higher ratings than teams they lost to). This year they seem to be penalizing Cumberland too much for their past seasons.

calpreps is for 12/03/07

1. Glassboro (11-0); Born Index #1; calpreps #1 – Classic Division Champions and #1 seed in Group 1 http://boro70a.blogspot.com/

2. Williamstown (8-2); Born Index #2; calpreps #3 – 7th seed in Group 4 - moved ahead of GC because they are the Royal Division Champions!

3. Gloucester Catholic (8-2); Born Index #5; calpreps #2 – finalist in Non-Public 2

4. Cumberland (7-3); Born Index #7; calpreps #4 – 4th seed in Group 3

5. Delsea (5-5); Born Index #4; calpreps #5 – 7th seed in Group 3

6. Clearview (7-3); Born Index #3; calpreps #6 – missed playoffs by one power point!

7. Penns Grove (7-3); Born Index #10; calpreps #8 – 7th seed in Group 1

8. Schalick (7-4); Born Index #12; calpreps #7 – 5th seed in Group 1

9. Gloucester (6-4); Born Index #11; calpreps #9 – 6th seed in Group 1

2007: Gloucester County Rankings: Final

These rankings are final!

Born rankings are from 12/03/07 and calpreps are for 12/03/07:

1. Glassboro (12-0); Born index #1; calpreps #1

2. Washington Twp. (8-2); Born index #2; calpreps #4 - beat Eastern which Williamstown failed to do.

3. Williamstown (8-2); Born index #5; calpreps #6 - played Eastern tough

Williamstown beat Deptford by 5 and Glassboro beat Deptford by 16 and Paulsboro by 17, so Williamstown is theoretically 10 points better than Paulsboro , but this was a tough call.

4. Paulsboro (11-1 or 9-3/forfeits); Born Index #3; calpreps #2

5. West Deptford (9-2); Born index #4; calpreps #3

6. Delsea (5-5); Born index #7; calpreps #8 - I am leaving them here, because they almost beat Williamstown and they beat Clearview.

7. Woodbury (8-3); Born index #8; calpreps #5

8. Clearview (7-3); Born index #6; calpreps #7

9. Kingsway (3-7); Born index #9; calpreps #10

The Classic Division is interesting as Paulsboro and St. Joe's would become rivals. What a game that would be!!!!!!! The rest of the Divsion is weak except for occasionally Woodbury. Penns Grove and Lindenwold provide can be competitive, but not up to the level of the top two.

The Freedom Division has several teams that can occasionally come through. Glassboro, Schalick, Gloucester and Salem are not strange to winning Division titles. Gateway, Woodstown and Pennsville are definitely stronger than the bottom 3 of the Classic. Since everyone here but Gateway are already in the same division, only Gateway would have major schedule changes.

The Patriot Division could be very be interesting. There are no guarantees here.

The Royal Division has Deptford and West Deptford together. That will be a good rivalry for sure.

The National Division would match-up Delsea and Hammonton and Ocean City, each of whom have had some decent seasons. Kingsway can be good at times also and Clearview can be a tough competitor sometimes.

The American Division would provide a new focus for Williamstown - out of the county and looking towars the shore, but they would no longer have to go undefeated to make the playoffs.

With 6 or 7 Division games, each team would have room to schedule old-time rivals, so Delsea and Williamstown + St. Joe's and Hammonton + Gloucester and Gloucester Catholic, for example, could still maintain their T-Day games.
